Liberal Studies Departmental Honors

The Liberal Studies Program awards Departmental Honors at graduation, recognizing distinguished students majoring in this field.

The requirements to earn honors in Liberal Studies are:


o Obtain a 3.5 grade point average in the major;
o Complete at least 45 units in Liberal Studies courses at this university;
o Successful completion of oral and written honors evaluations.

Upon earning honors in Liberal Studies, your transcript will state that you have earned Departmental Honors in Liberal Studies. At your commencement ceremony, you will be entitled to wear a Liberal Studies Honors medallion, you may purchase at the Coyote Bookstore.


You can also be considered for University Honors for graduation as well. An undergraduate student must have completed a minimum of 45 units of work at CSUSB in courses for which letter grades (A, B, C and D) were received. University Honors for commencement are based on the student's units and grade point average through the end of the quarter prior to commencement.


o Highest Honors: (summa cum laude)
an overall cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.9 or above and a grade point average of 3.9 or above in all work attempted at this university.


o High Honors: (magna cum laude) an overall cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.75 or above and a grade point average of 3.75 or above in all work attempted at this university.


o Honors: (cum laude)
an overall cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.5 or above and a grade point average of 3.5 or above in all work attempted at this university.

A Liberal Studies student who has completed 12 or more units and who earns a 3.5 or above G.P.A. in any regular academic term will be placed on the Dean's List.

o A Dean's Letter of Recognition is awarded to any full-time ( 12 units or more) Liberal Studies student who earns a 4.0 G.P.A. in any regular academic term will receive a letter of special recognition from the Dean of the College of Arts and Letters.

o A Presidential Letter of Recognition is awarded to any full-time ( 12 units or more) Liberal Studies student who earns a 4.0 G.P.A. in three consecutive regular academic terms will receive a letter of special recognition from the president of the university.
